This job description (JD) describes the core job duties of metallographer occupation:


1) Conducts microscopic, macroscopic, and other tests and investigations on samples of metals and alloys for purposes as metallurgical control over products or use in developing new or improved grades types of metals, alloys, or production methods.

2) Directs laboratory personnel in preparing of samples, like polishing or etching and designates area of sample where microscopic or macroscopic examination is to be made.

3) Studies photomicrographs performs microscopic examinations on samples for defining metal characteristics, like crystal structure, porosity and homogeneity.

4) Interprets findings prepares drawings, charts, and graphs for inclusion in reports for reference or instruction purposes, and writes reports regarding findings, conclusions, and recommendations.

5) Coordinates and participates in performing special tests, like end-quench hardenability, bend tensile, and grain size tests..
