The Meaing of Herzbergs Two-factor Theory

One of classic theories of motivation. Herzberg grouped the factors so far taken into account in another theories of motivation and divided them into:

- hygiene factors - working conditions, pay, relations in working environment, job stability, suitable administrative activities of employer and
- motivating factors - achievements, recognition for achievements displayed by superiors, responsibility, work in itself, the opportunity of promotion and development.

Satisfying the hygiene factors contributes - in line with Herzberg - only to maintaining work efficiency and lack of dissatisfaction. By focusing on these factors, the employer won't motivate employees to work harder and accomplish better results. It can only accomplish this by appealing to motivating factors that increase job satisfaction and commitment. This theory is also called the motivational factor and hygiene theory.
