WMS Software Selection Tips

A large number of different warehouse management systems are available on the market. There is plenty of choice. Because the differences between the systems aren't clear to everyone, companies often don't know which WMS best fits their type of company and the type of data with which the software must work. You'll not get much further with the information from suppliers, because it's naturally strongly colored.

WMS software selection tips

Have you ever been involved in the selection of a new IT system, as an IT decision maker or project leader or in another position? You then know how complicated and complicated such a selection process and the subsequent implementation process can be. Below some tips:

- The range of (different) software solutions is large. The business processes that the software must support aren't always easy to analyze, and the possibilities for configuring business software are almost limitless. Software projects are therefore difficult IT projects, where you can use the necessary help. Don't wait to engage external experts until serious problems arise.

- On the other hand: build up your own knowledge about the selection and implementation of WMS software. So don't blindly rely on the advice of external consultants. Only make choices that you understand yourself.

- Call in the help of an external (software) specialist who knows your type of business processes and has experience in your own industry.

- Don't just look at the major brands and key players in the business software market. Suppliers of business software that you don't know sometimes have very special features and benefits.

- Always make clear agreements with everyone involved in your software project and ensure that they are recorded.

- Make sure you have a good business case that you can use to determine the quality of a WMS. Adjust this business case in case of changing circumstances.

- As long as a software supplier hasn't sold anything to you, every problem can always be solved effortlessly according to him. It's precisely in the testing phase that it's important that you continually ask about guarantees and references. What you don't want is that the limitations of a WMS only come to light when the signatures are set and you have already entered the implementation phase.

- Don't only look at the specifications of the WMS software itself, but also at the supplier. On the contrary, you must work closely with him during the implementation phase, and that takes longer than a few days. If there is no 'click', an implementation will be difficult.

- Ensure that the costs of the WMS project remain manageable and that the planning doesn't derail. During the selection, it's important to check carefully which supplier appears to be the most reliable and offers the most certainty. Assume that there will almost always be 'extra work' and almost never 'less work'.

- One of the most important things in a WMS selection project is that you consider which modules your business needs and how many different systems they contain. If you opt for one system, the advantage is that different modules easily communicate with each other. But you can also opt for multiple 'best-of-breed' systems; they may offer better support.
