Who is a Professional

HOME | BLOG | WHO IS A PROFESSIONAL

The terms 'professional', 'professionalism' or 'being professional' all refer to the desire to deliver visible quality. This certainly also applies to you as a quality expert.

Who exactly is a 'professional'?

A professional is someone who chooses and is committed to serving customers better and better in a competent and honest manner, using specialist knowledge and experience. In doing so, he makes use of and actively contributes to a community of fellow professionals who continuously develop the profession .

6 Characteristics of the (quality) professional

For further describing 'who is a professional' we give you six professional features:

1. Commitment to act in the interests of individual clients in particular, as well as the well-being of society in general

Being a professional is primarily about service . The agreement (originally) made by the professional with the community is the commitment to act responsibly, unselfishly and wisely (within their own profession). In return, the community offers the opportunity to earn a living, study and pursue the profession.

In practice, this point of emphasis on service provision and the interests of the customer is not often raised in discussions of what is or is not a professional. While questions still arise such as: how often to balance the interests of the customer with the direction the organization has chosen?

2. Developed ability to make decisions with integrity, in situations that are uncertain in both technology and ethics

Integrity in acting is related to the service nature of being a professional. The dilemmas that the professional encounters in the exercise of his profession are different from those of a professional. Many of the professional's issues are unique; solutions often cannot be measured or checked for quality.

Gardner and Shulman emphasize the learning process. As dynamics and complexity in the world increase, the pressure on making decisions with integrity increases and the importance of the associated learning process increases.

3. Coherent whole of theory and specialist knowledge, with its own principles for growth and reorganization

If there is one stable characteristic of professionals, it is their ability to make translations and connections between theory (formal knowledge) and practice. The knowledge that is of value in practice is different from the knowledge that science or knowledge centers present.

Knowledge needs carriers or translators. Being a professional means that you are the translator yourself. A targeted search for formal knowledge cannot be avoided and is actually part of optimal professional practice. The way in which knowledge increases and disseminates must be appropriate for the times.

4. Specialist set of professional skills, practices and behaviors, unique to the profession

These are own activities that define a successful practice. 80 percent of all learning takes place in practice. Gardner and Shulman call it the technical skills of analysis, argumentation, treatment, ritual, consultation, diagnosis, action and interaction that characterize a profession.

5. Organized approach to learning from experience, both individual and collective, with a view to developing new knowledge linked to practice

All of the foregoing leads to this point. You need each other to grow in your profession, to gain new insights. Many seek this in formal training, but self-regulation, cooperation, socialization and supervision are also important.

The profession itself must also continue to develop, such as reorganizing knowledge and about gaining new insights and adding these to the profession. Therein lies the core of this fifth point: the development of professionals and colleagues.

6. Development of a professional community responsible for overseeing and monitoring quality, both in practice and in initial training

In the previous five characteristics we find references to collectivity. Although the professional community is a recognizable and central point where all developments, views and mores converge, does that now characterize the professional? Or is it an automatic consequence and an integral part of being a professional?

Is the core of this community not in the process of learning and development, in which the others are needed for their own reflection?
