What Your Resume Should Look Like


Creating a resume, that's an art for which you actually already need a diploma. However, you should succeed if you follow a few simple guidelines. To save you a bit of surfing we have collected a team for you. Good luck on your new job!


Keep It Simple Stupid has been one of the best advice you can and can get in the business world for years: it also applies to your resume. Try not to make a work of art out of it, but keep it simple: there is already a lot of info on a few pages. Don't make it harder than it already is.

2. Categories

Of course, all relevant information must fit on two pages: according to the VDAB, these categories must certainly be included: your personal information, a photo, your studies and training, experience, language and computer knowledge. Your skills, hobbies and a few references are also included. Of course you can also set up additional information such as, for example, if you qualify for certain processes that might mean subsidies for your employer.

3. Length

Of course you want to put as much information as possible on your resume, but believe us: two pages is the absolute maximum. You're not the only resume that your future employer receives. Being short and to the point is much better than seventeen pages with all your hobbies and the names of your cats.

4. Eye the eye

We already said that you should keep it simple, but that doesn't mean that you can't tell striking things about yourself. Do you like to read, but do you also like bungee jumping? Put the latter on your resume. Have you done an internship abroad? Put that on it. Fourteen colors aren't necessary, but if you're in a creative job, or in the graphics sector, you might be able to come up with something better than two stapled A4 sheets.

5. Spelling and grammar

Not all jobs find it important that you can show that you're in control of the -dt rule, but anyway shows a short game check that you want to make an effort to win the job. If you don't want to make the effort to write a good letter, why would your boss make the effort to read it?

6. The most important first

Does the job advertisement focus on your diploma or just on your social media skills? Then set that category higher. It makes no sense to promote your language skills if that's just a bonus, if the advertisement specifically asks for a degree in engineering. Put your diplomas at the top. Conversely: as a social media manager, you put your blog at the top and your diploma perhaps a little lower.

7. Short sentences

You don't have to prove that you know the synonym dictionary from outside and the chance that you have to address someone very formally is small. So leave the archaic statements at home, use normal language and just stay polite.

8. No jargon

And about that: unless you have to take a test or describe your work experience, it's best not to use jargon. Don't say that you were a ground floor manager if you're just cleaning and don't call yourself a hygiene specialist if you have been a representative for household products.

9. Keep it relevant

That you have ever been a chiropodist may be relevant. But listing seventeen holiday jobs as dishwashers is a lot less. Be professional: make sure that what you show is also worth mentioning. You don't talk about your favorite takeaway during your job interview, do you? No: keep it relevant.

10. Don't be terribly original but be personal

As we said, a color bonanza isn't the intention. But don't try to be too many twenty in a dozen. Certainly on the parts in your resume where you can come across well, you should play on your strengths. Some people speak an extra language, such as German or French. Others may have a cool or separate hobby (such as lace, building orphanages or learning English). Make sure you put it in, it gives the HR department a reason to think about you when they are looking for a candidate.

11. Have it read

No matter how great you're in drafting letters of application and resumes: have them read. A typo is quickly made and in your own text you can read about mistakes the quickest. And since you're reading this article, you probably want the best resume ever. Well, believe us. Have it checked.
