The Definition of Job Responsibility (Duty)

Responsibility - duty - within the labor market means that you're aware of tasks of yourself and colleagues within an organization. You also know that these tasks must be performed properly. If you act seriously, carefully and with integrity, there is a good chance that you possess this competence.

"The job responsibility is a competence that occurs in every student job or starter position."

You sometimes end up in situations that ask who is responsible. Then people often point to each other. Then there is still something to work on this competence! Do you really want to check for yourself if you're responsible? Or do you want to work on this competence? And are you curious how you can demonstrate this competence during a job interview? Read on!

Indicators of responsibility

People often think that you're responsible if you perform a few tasks independently. But then you don't know if this competence is your strength. How do you know if you're responsible? Find out for yourself to what extent the following statements apply to you:

- I work seriously and carefully: you want to deliver certain quality;
- If someone lags behind his / her duties, I offer help: you're very involved and you're happy to help (also for someone else);
- I act with integrity: you perform your job correctly;
- I need little guidance or control: you can sense which tasks have priority.

Related competences

- Empathy: you respect the wishes and ideas of others and you understand their situation and / or views. You think along with the organization.
- Loyalty: you adapt to the standards and rules of the company. This means that you put the employer's interest above your own.
- Independence: you think independently and need little guidance or control.

Working on the competence responsibility

The competence responsibility can be further developed. Of course it depends on which company you end up with. If you have more input and influence, you'll also be more inclined to perform your tasks properly. Your sense of responsibility is stimulated in this environment.

- Do you work accurately and conscientiously? Then there is a good chance that you also have a sense of responsibility;
- Developing a vision : if you develop a vision of your company, you learn to form a balanced opinion and you feel more involved. How do you do this? By collecting information, anticipating and exchanging many ideas / thoughts with colleagues and relations about the organization;
- Think of solutions: these solutions help your company further. That doesn't necessarily have to be something big. Ensuring that the old printer is replaced can also be a good solution for your environment.

The competencies are obedient and responsibility is sometimes confused. Being obedient is about 'must' and being responsible is about 'wanting'.

Professions where responsibility is important

As stated at the beginning, this competence does occur in every student side job or starter job. With one function a little more than the other. If you often work alone, this competence is much more important, because your work can't simply be left behind. Examples of this are:

- Manager: you manage a company and you're therefore also responsible for part of the decision-making. You must propose solutions independently.
- Manager: the same applies to a Manager as to a Manager. You're responsible for a team. If there are problems, you're expected to resolve the situations independently.
- Journalist: as a Journalist you have a lot to do with deadlines that you have to Sometimes you are even called out of bed for current topics. As a Journalist you therefore have a great responsibility. Not recording in't an option: you must always be ready!

Demonstrate competence responsibility during job interview

During a job interview you want to prove that you occupy this competence. But how do you do that? For example, you can list situations (that you have experienced) and link them to responsibility. Examples of such situations are:

- A colleague of yours fell ill and you were asked if you wanted to continue working for longer;
- You don't have a 9 to 5 mentality : if something needs to be finished, you do this too;
- A colleague didn't show up and you suggested that you continue working longer.
