Cover Letter Format

Share on Facebook Share on Twitter Share on LinkedIn

The way in which you prepare the cover letter is very important. It shows that you have an eye for detail and that you can present something in a clear and neat way. Both are traits that a recruiter is always looking for. Moreover, letters that are neatly structured with a nice layout are read faster and better by the recruiter. In this article we will give you some tips that will help you to make a cover letter with the layout/format, we'll also give you some of the best cover letter examples. Take into account the following 9 critical points regarding the format (layout) of your cover letter.

9 Tips for a beautiful layout:

1. Name and salutation

Start with your own name, address, zip code and city, followed by the name of the company or organization where you want to apply.

Don't forget to state clearly to whom you are sending the letter:

always call first before sending the letter, so that you know to whom you should address the letter.

2. Place and date

State the place where you write the letter followed by the date .

3. Subject of the letter

Provide the description of the position behind the 'Subject' heading .

It is professional to make the font of this line 2 or 3 points smaller.

Give it a try and you will see it looks nice.

4. The body text

Use no more than 3 or 4 paragraphs for your letter.

And make sure you use sufficient blank lines.

In this way the letter can be easily scanned by the recruiter.

Remember that this is probably not the only letter the recruiter reads in a day.

5. Closure

End with 'With kind regards' and your signature .

For a letter that you want to send by email, you can use a scanned signature that you paste in the document.

But of course you can also take a photo of your signature with your smartphone and paste it as an image in the cover letter.

6. Order and tidiness

Let your cover letter be a model of order and tidiness .

That means no stains or creases with a printed letter.

Consider printing your letter on thicker paper and sending it together with your resume in an A4 envelope.

With this kind of small details you will stand out more among the recruiter.

7. No strange fonts

Use a standard font .

Think of Arial, Verdana or Calibri.

A recruiter must be able to read the letter effortlessly.

8. No errors

Make sure the letter is clear.

Don't forget your spell check and always have the letter read by someone who has an eye for it.

Print the letter and read it again carefully.

You discover errors faster on paper than when reading from the screen.

9. Create a PDF

Preferably don't write your cover letter in an email.

You never know how an email arrives at the recruiter.

Everyone uses a different email program so you never know how the recruiter exactly reads your letter.

So use a normal text editor such as Word or Google Docs (free).

And then always make a PDF of it .

With a PDF you know for sure that the reader sees the document exactly the same as you intended.

You can easily send a PDF by mail .
