The overall objective of managing product data " PDM, Product Data Management " is to obtain information from the exact product or service right person. Generally, this refers to the technical data of the product for the design, production and assembly of the items. More specifically, in the PDM system you'll find details about the design, materials, test results, etc. Specially producers of composite itemsThey make great use of product data management. For example, the department that manufactures the chairs and the interior lining of cars, needs many technical specifications of the department that's responsible for making the bodywork. Even if parts of the production are outsourced, PDM is often used. In this case, the information is provided or obtained from an external company.

Data management of the product is closely linked with the management information of the product " Product Information Management, PIM ". However, the PDM differs from the PIM because it focuses more on internal business processes. The main objective is to optimize production " internal ". The PIM goes beyond the internal processes of the company and focuses on the consumer experience. The company's processes are also optimized with PIM, but it's done as a means to improve the customer experience.

PDM software

Product data management can be offered in different ways. There are both separate packages and modules within an ERP system. The advantage of an ERP module is the powerful integration with the rest of the business processes. The disadvantage is that these modules may be a little less specialized, or that integration with softwares outside the ERP is more difficult. In this case, it's also worth considering a separate package that links to the ERP.

From PDM to product life cycle management

PDM software is often combined with the CAD program for technical drawing. In this case, the necessary data is found in the product data management, and from there the CAD system is opened when technical drawings must be made or adjusted. The advantage of this is that the CAD doesn't have to be linked separately to the ERP system. If the PDM is linked, the CAD is also indirectly linked.

The combination of PDM and CAD is often referred to as product life cycle management " Product Lifecycle Management, PLM ". A CAD program is the first step in the life cycle of a product to consider, in fact, because it's its design. However, a complete PLM system goes further. With this software, the complete life cycle of a product is managed: from the idea to the design, production, arrival and, sometimes, even the use of the client.
