What are position requirements?

Position requirements are stated in the job profile or job vacancy. But what exactly are position requirements? A position requirement is that knowledge, skills, training, work experience, etc. that is required to perform the job.

Once job positions have been clearly described, including the associated duties, responsibilities and authorities, the requirements for performing a particular position can be established.

As an employer, what position requirements can I set?

By means of the position requirements you indicate what the candidates must meet in order to be considered for the vacant position. It is important that you only ask for characteristics, skills and knowledge that are relevant to the position. If you fail to do so, you can disadvantage and exclude certain groups.

1. Knowledge and training

Certain knowledge is required to perform a function. A defined educational level and direction must be included.

2. Skills

Certain skills are also required to perform the position. You should describe these, for example: leadership skills, communication skills.

3. Work experience

4. Personal characteristics

Once you know which relevant position requirements you want to use, it's best to record them and make them known to the candidates. This makes them clear to everyone and makes it possible to check whether the job requirements do not change during the procedure. If you ensure a transparent and careful recruitment and selection procedure, candidates will be less likely to feel that a difference is being made.

Applying for jobs? Match the position requirements

Matching the position requirements is your best key to get an interview! This could be done when writing your cover letter. In the first paragraph of the middle part of the cover letter, you explain how you meet the job requirements (work experience / education).

It's not enough to write that you meet the position requirements. Make a selection of the most relevant requirements and explain why you meet them. You can use both your education and your work experience in this explanation.

In addition, you can sometimes also cite social activities if they are relevant to the position. Take, for example, someone applying for a managerial position. Although he has no leading experience in his previous jobs, he has volunteered to chair the local pop festival for two years. That is relevant for this job, and he can certainly mention it.

Phrase positively

If you do not meet one or more position requirements, indicate how you intend to compensate for that. If a position requirement that you do not meet is not super relevant, then you say ... nothing.

Work out a good example, in which you demonstrate on the basis of your practical experience why you meet the position requirements. When applying for a job, it is important to give as many concrete examples as possible. For example, you can explain how you handled a particular case or how you solved a problem. Such an example showing that you can do something is more convincing than just the statement "I'm good at ...".

With an open application you have to think carefully about what relevant job requirements could be. If you feel you have too little guidance, try looking up additional information about the company. You may find out through newspaper articles and annual reports what's going on at the company and you can link that to your experience and education.
