Overview About the Engineering Career

The Engineering is a technical-scientific career that has the ambition to solve problems through calculations and analysis and design based in science, to produce or implement efficient solutions and cost-effective.

Engineering techniques can be successfully applied in many different fields. The main sectors in Engineering are:

  • Chemical engineering: applies chemical, physical, biological and mathematical principles for the production and transformation of raw materials into usable products, such as plastics, petrochemicals, medicines
  • Civil engineering: it's related to the planning, design and construction of building structures (houses, buildings, skyscrapers, schools, hospitals... ) and infrastructures (roads, railways, bridges, water systems, power plants, dams, ports, airports... )
  • Electronic engineering: deals with all processes and plants related to the production, transport and transformation of electrical energy, electronic applications and machinery, telecommunications systems, computers...
  • Mechanical engineering: designs and manufactures components, plants and mechanical systems of varying degrees of complexity, intended for many different industrial fields
  • Computer engineering: concerns the design, construction and management of systems and infrastructures to process information and data - such as software systems and telecommunication networks

With the scientific and industrial development many transversal sectors and sub-categories of Engineering were born, linked to the emergence of new fields of application of technical knowledge: from mechatronic engineering to bioengineering, from biomedical nanotechnology to systems engineering, from aerospace engineering to the study of renewable sources.

What types of companies do they hire in the engineering sector?

The engineers are working in many different companies, of all sizes, from multinationals to start-ups, eg in engineering enterprises and mechatronic, in technology companies in the field of robotics and ' automation industry, in construction companies, in the field of ' energy, in car manufacturers, in the aerospace and naval industry, in information technology and telecommunications, in the chemical and pharmaceutical industry.

The engineer jobs also come from engineering consulting firms, which offer companies and organizations consulting services to streamline and optimize processes and make use of the most advanced technologies.

Or, an engineer may find employment in private and public research and development ( R&D ) laboratories, government agencies and universities.

Engineering - Job prospects

Engineering is a rapidly growing sector, which allows for excellent career prospects, very competitive salaries and professional stability. However, to become an engineer, a demanding university training course ( degree in Engineering ) and in-depth technical and scientific skills are required, to be constantly updated.

Technological evolution in fact changes the view within which they move the engineers: the problems are always new, innovative, and must therefore be the solutions. New technologies are added and integrated those already existing and the field of application of Engineering is expanding more and more: all this is reflected in the growth of job offers in the Engineering sector.

Some of the specializations and engineering disciplines that are emerging concern robotics and nanotechnologies, the development of intelligent sensors (basis of the IoT, the Internet of Things ), virtual and augmented reality, bioinformatics engineering, the development of supermaterials and innovative textile fibers, the production of energy from renewable sources.

What skills are needed for the the engineering career?

The fields of Engineering are many and very branched, and each requires specific knowledge. However, to work in the engineering field a number of skills are required that can be considered common:

Problem solving

The engineer is often seen as the professional who "solves problems": and that is exactly what he does. An engineer is always looking for new ways to apply existing knowledge to solve problems through a logical and rational process.

IT skills

Many of the tasks of an engineer are performed on the computer, using software and programs specific to the engineering field. Therefore computer skills are essential for any engineer, who is involved in optimizing a production or logistics process, designing and testing a component or simulating the behavior of a prototype.

Communication skills and teamwork

Ability to work in a team and communicate specific technical content in a clear and effective way are closely related skills, both important for engineers - both when they are placed in a work team that includes other technicians, and when they have to lead a team as managers or Project Manager.

Management skills

The ability to manage complex projects, with many resources to control and a large number of people involved, is usually required to make a career as an engineer. This is why it's important for an engineer to have strong organizational and managerial skills in project management.
