Architecture Career

Talking to young people pursuing a career in architecture has shown that most architectural students are involved in the design as if there were no other option: they simply could not imagine doing anything else.

The architecture for many isn't only a career, but a vocation . It's not that future architecture students make their decision in an emotional or irrational way. On the contrary, it's rather a situation in which the skills, talents, interests and concerns of these people are aligned with the options offered by life as an architect.

Architecture: learning to create spaces to live

In architecture, they don't just teach you how to build. You learn to create pleasant and functional spaces. These can be spaces to work, live, play sports, go to a concert, etc. etc. That's why this study is for people who like design and aesthetics, who have the ability to understand the needs of others and who don't fear numbers.

During the architecture career three aspects are analyzed, each equally important: technology, theory and design.

You'll learn about the different materials that are available for the construction and its characteristics. Not all materials are suitable for all uses and specially for all places and climatic conditions. You'll learn to choose the most suitable materials for your project and apply the technologies available in the market to improve the spaces.

Of course, also learn to design, the aspect of the career that generally attracts the attention of future students. An architectural design not only has to be aesthetic, it also has to be functional and satisfy the needs of the people who are going to use the building or space. You also have to comply with many rules related to issues such as public space and security, topics that you'll study during this career.

After the study you can pawn as an architect, contractor or specialist in urban planning. You can dedicate to design and develop buildings, but also public spaces such as parks, shopping centers and plazas or landscapes in general.

The architects work in the private sector and also within the Public Works areas of government entities.

Relations with the Arts

The qualities that most clearly distinguish architecture from other established professions are its close links to the arts and their similarities to artistic endeavors. Creativity is crucial for all professions, but for the architect it's of the highest priority. In addition, architects produce objects that are fixed in space, public and generally durable.

Importance of design

The design requires a rational understanding of how buildings are constructed, how they work, historical models of building types, materials, mechanical systems, structures, etc. But being a good architect also means that the professional has some sensitivity, talent or creative ability.

What types of companies do they hire in the Architecture sector?

Design and architecture professionals find employment in agencies that offer design and communication services, product & packaging design, advertising agencies and publishing houses, in architecture and interior design studios.

There are also job advertisements for in-house designers in very structured and large companies, for example in the automotive, furniture or fashion sectors. Many designers, web designers and architects work as a freelance instead.

Design and Architecture - Job prospects

The IT and digital evolution has profoundly influenced the Design and Architecture sector.

First of all, the working tools have been revolutionized: pencils and drafting machines, squares and compasses (the traditional tools of design and drawing ) have been flanked and in some cases completely supplanted by graphic processing programs and software for design and planning (such as CAD, Computer-Aided Design software ).

Furthermore, architects and designers can exploit completely new technical possibilities in their work: for example, thanks to three-dimensional design, 3D printing or the use of virtual and augmented reality.

There are also a series of new professions related to the internet and new technologies, with excellent career prospects: starting from the Web Designer up to the UI / UX ( User Interface and User eXperience ) expert.

What skills are needed for the architecture career?

Transforming an idea into a concrete project requires specific skills: these are the skills transversal to all professions in the Design and Architecture sector.

Skill in drawing

Professionals in the Design and Architecture sector must have the ability to give a concrete, precise and detailed form to an idea, through technical or artistic drawing, on paper and on the computer.

Design serves to create impact visual solutions: professionals in the sector then use their creativity to give a strong distinctive character and personality to the object, building or graphic element they are designing, in compliance with the constraints established with the client.

Esthetic sense

It's the talent for using and combining colors, shapes and sizes. Whether you are designing a building, a sofa or a website, the ability to give harmony to all the visual elements is required.

IT skills

The ability to use graphics programs, CAD software, 3D modeling and rendering programs must be part of the skill set of those who want to pursue a career in Design and Architecture.

Time and activity management

Each project has a deadline, and designers and architects must be able to organize the work to meet the deadlines. This ability is even more important for those who work on behalf of external clients (such as freelancers ), as punctuality in meeting deadlines is essential for establishing ongoing professional relationships.

The future

The well-being of the architect's profession depends on the links with a sustainable construction industry. The level of construction activity, both nationally and internationally, significantly determine the amount and type of services that lend architects.

The demand for architectural services has increased, specially in the pre-design and post-construction phases. This suggests a repositioning of the profession, along with other professions, as part of the service economy . New functions and markets have been created for services.

With the proliferation of material on design in general and sustainability in particular and its importance in the quality of our lives, it seems that the stage is ready for architects to have an increasing influence on the environment. New tools and the evolution of knowledge increase the possibilities and approaches of what is designed and how it's constructed.
