Telecommunication - Term Overview


The concept of telecommunication encompasses all forms of remote communication. The word includes the Greek prefix tele, which means "distance" or "far". Therefore, telecommunication is a technique that involves the transmission of a message from one point to another, usually with the additional feature of being bidirectional. The telephone, the Radio, the television and data transmission through computers are part of the telecommunications sector.

Within the field of telecommunications it's important that the importance of the variety of physical material used in them is known. The success of the process depends on it, its quality and its performance, and in this sense it implies that it's necessary to study a series of guidelines and criteria to bet on the most appropriate material. Specifically, experts in this area have to proceed to thoroughly analyze what are the costs, security, capacity, errors that can bring or also the ease of use it has.

The English physicist James Clerk Maxwell was responsible for laying the foundations for the development of telecommunication, by introducing the concept of an electromagnetic wave to describe through mathematics the interaction between electricity and magnetism. In this way, Maxwell announced that it was possible to propagate waves through free space by using electric shocks, something Heinrich Hertz proved in 1887.

The history of telecommunications began to develop in the first half of the nineteenth century, with the electric telegraph (which allowed to send messages with letters and numbers). Later the phone appeared, which added the possibility of communicating using the voice. With radio waves, wireless communication came to complete a true revolution in the habits of mankind.

Of course, technological innovations in the field of telecommunication never stopped. The modem enabled the transmission of data between computers and other devices, which was the starting point for the development of the Internet and other computer networks.

In education and training it's important to emphasize the fact that, at university level, there is a Degree in Telecommunications Technology Engineering in some countries. A qualification is that, in turn, is composed of two areas (Sound and Image, and Telecommunications Systems) and that allows students who do it to get a job as a Telecommunications Technical Engineer.

Such is the importance that in today's society have telecommunication technologies that this profession has become one of those with the most future prospects. And it's that experts in the field can find a job in both network operators and manufacturers of telecommunications equipment through broadcasting companies and even television operators. And all this without forgetting that another of the professional outputs with more demand is in the area of ​​configuration, installation and maintenance of mobile and optical communication networks.

Today, telecommunications make up an industrial sector that moves millions of dollars a year worldwide.
