The term " Internet of Things " " IoT " is a concept that has been extended in the understanding of new computer equipment and Internet development. But what does it really mean? What does it mean for users and companies?

Definition of the Internet of Things

Internet of Things is a term used to refer to the ability of digital interconnection of different types of devices through the Internet. It also refers to a type of Internet where there will be more things or machines connected than people, due to advances in process automation. This Internet of Things is also related to Big Data, since given the large number of connected devices, the level of information of people, organizations and companies will increase greatly.

What technologies will take advantage of this Internet of Things?

There are technologies that have led to the concept of the Internet of Things being extended and popularized to refer to the digital interconnection between devices. In the first place we find the Smart Cities or Smart Cities, which connect different everyday objects to the network with the aim of providing information to the citizen or performing automated tasks. These cities are connecting sensor networks at traffic lights, sewers, lighting networks, etc., which collect data in real time so that those responsible for surveillance or maintenance can make decisions in real time. There are other technologies that are also oriented towards the Internet of Things, such as:

- Object interconnection: the connection of everyday objects will allow remote tasks to be carried out, applying orders through a browser with a username and password.
- Data extraction: the Internet of Things will need large amounts of data to be able to automate certain tasks or respond to external stimuli to decide what actions to take depending on the variables found in those stimuli. These data extraction and interpretation technologies will be essential on the Internet of Things.
- Low consumption communication: after data extraction and processing, the Internet of Things devices will need to communicate decisions or information to those other devices or persons responsible for the different tasks, so that the technologies of Communication will be essential for these tasks.

What does it mean for users and companies?

Users and companies of this Internet of Things will have to adapt to new work rhythms and take advantage of this interconnection in their favor. The workflows will have to be optimized to be able to perform correctly all the automated processes through the devices connected to the Internet. Real-time decision making will be an indispensable element in this new environment, since the continuous flow of data will make the speed of action indispensable.

Companies will also need to adapt their structures to these amounts of information and processes. One of the options is to migrate your systems to cloud platforms that can automatically connect to the network; In this way, a large investment in internal infrastructure would be avoided in order to deal with all the information and data that'll have to be collected for this Internet of Things.
