How to Prepare for a Skype Interview

Have a Skype Interview? Get Prepared By Our 4 Tips!

Thanks to Skype you can respond to every dream job. The one on the other side of the country or the world. Actually it's a normal interview, only not in the same room. Still, Young Professionals find it a bit uncomfortable to apply through webcam. With these 4 tips you'll prepare your Skype application well prepared:

1. CHOOSE A REPRESENTATIVE USERNAME AND PROFILE PICTURE FOR YOUR SKYPE PROFILE

Your photo and username are the first impression the recruiter will get from you online. So we don't have to explain to you that an incoming call from @ Jeroentje_83, who drinks a beer at a festival on his profile picture, doesn't give a very good picture of your business qualities.

Set your first and last name or a variation on it as username, and choose a photo that you would also put on your resume.

2. PROVIDE A PROFESSIONAL ENVIRONMENT

You usually do a Skype interview from home, so part of your living environment is in the picture. Check what's in the background when you're behind your screen. A mountain of clothes? A counter full of dirty dishes? Do not do it. Sit in a (tidy!) Study, or find a place with as neutral a background as possible. If necessary, put some furniture aside or remove a poster from the wall.

3. DRESS WELL

Even if you don't have to leave the house for a Skype call, dress as if you were going to the office. It can feel a bit exaggerated to buy a 3-piece suit for an online job interview, but interviews always apply: rather overdressed than underdressed. So comb your hair and put on a neat blouse with a jacket.

Oh yes, watch your pants and shoes too! You never know if you want to get up during the conversation to grab something or solve a technical problem. It's silly if you turn out to wear sweatpants.

4. MAKE SURE EVERYTHING RUNS SMOOTHLY

Of course you have answers to all questions of the recruiter, you have prepared a pitch and you know which questions you want to ask. You're therefore completely ready for the content. Now spend some time in all peripheral matters. Do you have a good internet connection, are you well in the picture and does your sound work optimally? Test it out by Skype with a friend.

Do not get distracted during your Skype application. Turn off your phone, alarm clock and other programs or notifications on your laptop. Do your roommates remember that you have a Skype call? Remind them again that you don't want to be disturbed.
