The work experience certificate is an important document that an employer must give to every employee when requested from an employee. This also for helping the employee to promote the search for a new job if the reason is to leave. It can not in any way be used as a means of pressure on the part of the employer.

The work experience certificate is an important document. It must be well-written so its wording shouldn't be done lightly and certain specific rules must be respected.

1. What is the purpose of a work certificate?

The purpose of the work certificate is to facilitate the worker's economic future, but also to inform future employers as faithfully as possible about the worker's activity, benefits and conduct.

2. When can the employee apply for a work certificate?

The worker can ask the employer at any time for a work certificate (The employee has the right to ask the employer at anytime). In other words, the employee can claim it:

  • During the employment relationship (intermediate work certificate), for example in the event of a change of job, manager, occupancy rate, service or job search or an imminent transfer of business.
  • At the end or beyond the working relationship (final work certificate).

The employee may require a work certificate even if their contract has ended during the test period. However, the certificate must focus exclusively on the activities that the employee actually performed, not to mention all the tasks mentioned in the employment contract that the employee hasn't completed.

3. What form should it take?

The work certificate must be in writing, prepared on the employer's letterhead, dated and signed. It should be drafted if possible by a person who is particularly apt to assess the worker's benefits. The employee has the right to require that the work certificate is signed by an employee hierarchically superior, not a colleague of the same rank, or even a lower level.
