A self-assessment is an evaluation that an individual makes of himself or of his own question. To evaluate, meanwhile, involves calculating, detecting or indicating the value of something.

It can be said that self-evaluation involves making a judgment about oneself, either at a general level or focused on a certain action. Typically, it's carried out in order to learn and improve.

The self-assessment appears in different fields. In the academic field, students are often encouraged to self-evaluate to discover how they reached a goal and know what they can generate to increase their performance.

With regard to educational systems, it's understood that self-assessment allows the student to know their individual progress. In this way it also contributes to reinforce instruction, to assume responsibilities and to motivate. For the teacher, on the other hand, the self-evaluation of the students is useful to know what assessment they make of the contents and the learning process.

There are multiple ways to develop a self-assessment. A simple method is that the person wonders what he knew at a certain time, how he managed to learn what he learned and what he knows now. Making conceptual maps and comparative tables, in this framework, is very useful.

In short, self-assessment appears as an activity of reflection. It's an analysis that helps to understand a performance and favors personal development when executed periodically. To avoid a counterproductive effect, it's important not to overdo it with self-criticism so as not to lose motivation.
