Checklist for an Effective Cover Letter

Because employers often receive many requests for each vacancy, you must ensure that your cover letter makes a lasting impression for the right reasons. Here are some points to check in order to increase your chances of success.

Checklist for More Effecient Cover Letter

- Be concise: Ideally, a cover letter should contain half an A4 or a full page if necessary. Read the document and cut out unnecessary words and sentences. Don't fill in the available space by repeating what is already in your resume.
- Tailor-made for the organization: You must rewrite your cover letter every time you apply for a position to target the individual company. Sending a generic letter for all applications rarely produces positive results and recruiters can discover your lack of time and effort within a mile.
- Proofreading: Never rely on a computer control program to catch every error. Print your cover letter and check the spelling and grammar errors before you pass it on to your family member or friend to have a look. Also make sure that your own contact details and company name are correct.
- Layout: Presentation is important, so you must prepare your cover letter correctly. Make sure the document is as clear as possible, use the same font and size as you use in your resume, and if you send it by mail or hand it in, use plain white standard paper of good quality to print it.
- Identify your USPs: They are your unique selling points. Be positive about what you have to offer and clearly indicate how your skills and experience meet the requirements set in the job description. Show why you're the perfect candidate.
- Include Examples: Back up the claims in your cover letter with real evidence or examples showing how and when you used your skills and experience.
