Adhocracy is the absence of an organizational hierarchy. It's a concept contrary to bureaucracy.

The concept of adhocracy was proposed by Bennis and Slater and Henry Mintzberg, in 1964 and refers to the functioning of organizations where there are no hierarchies. Rather, decisions are made collectively. That is, making use of the capabilities of a work team, who spontaneously propose and solve the solution of a problem.

Organizations that apply adhocracy require a flexible and adaptive operating methodology, which is the opposite of bureaucracy, where decisions are made by a single unit of command and go down to the organization to be executed.

Adhocracy in organizations

This work system is the one most liked among young people, or well called, the generation of " millennials ", accustomed to participating in decisions, rather than holding a position of hierarchy and giving orders to other units.

Another important aspect is that the adhocracy links in a better way to the work units that don't usually communicate, such as finance and marketing.

The definition of the annual budget of a company could be better defined if all the units are present and are aware of the expenses of each one, as well as the importance they have in the company. In this sense, an adhocratic structure would be very useful.

On the other hand, in the same exercise a bureaucratic structure would allow decisions to be made by the general management. Regardless, of course, of the differences that the other areas of the organization may have and with this, following only one management criterion.

As you can see, each structure has its advantages and disadvantages, it's a matter of having experience in each one and seeing which one best suits your way of working. In the next section we will see benefits and problems.

Advantages and disadvantages of adhocracy

Some advantages of this way of working are the following:

- It promotes the participation of the members of the organization.
- It allows constant learning by submitting to problem solving and teamwork.
- Focus problem solving on the capabilities of each member.
- Incorporating this work system could generate some problems. Here we mention some disadvantages of adhocracy:

Communication problems can occur during decision processes.

- If the organization isn't used to working "adhocratically", they may be constantly looking for a boss.
- Decisions could take too long by going through the opinion of many people.

In this sense, the aspects of the bureaucracy related to a descending vertical business structure, where decisions go down, are replaced by a horizontal structure where the team proposes and resolves at all times.
