10 Tips for Successful Resume

1 - Adapt your resume according to the position

It will never be said enough but writing and sending a same resume to several recruiters is a bad idea. Indeed, each position and company presents its specifications: desired skills, values, desired qualities ... There are no two such companies! Therefore, it's important to adapt your resume to each job offer in order to get as close as possible to the ideal candidate wanted by the company! It's then a question of writing a targeted resume, which takes into account the know-how, qualities or skills sought by the recruiter by personalizing your resume so that it best meets the job offer you are applying for. A targeted resume is therefore a much more personal resume, where one doesn't try to show the full extent of your skills or to list all your professional experiences, but rather that one is the person whose business needs for this job.

2 - Stay clear and concise: don't say too much!

Often, candidates tend to mean all training followed or any professional experiences lived. It would be a mistake! Indeed, your resume is not there to tell you everything you've done in your career, even only what is related and interested in the position. In the same way, every training or experience should be described in the shortest and most effective way possible, using simple words and going essential. No room for frills on a resume! Avoid also mentioning too personal information, such as marital status, place of birth or nationality if it's not necessary.

3 - Use keywords and identify skills sought

Nowadays, many companies use automated recruitment assistance software (the "Applicant Tracking System" or " ATS ") to facilitate the hiring of new candidates. These computer programs sort applications received by means of algorithms to determine which are the best candidates to fill a given position. The keywords contained in each resume are then scanned according to the criteria imposed by the recruiter. Hence the importance of thinking about using keywords and highlighting them in your resume! In this way, you will put the odds on your side to outsmart the robots and get your resume reached the office of a recruiter.

4 - Highlight its successes and skills

When writing your resume, don't just describe your work experiences, but highlight your successes, the projects you've completed, or the assignments you've completed to their terms. In this way your resume will be livelier and reflect your results more than your responsibilities. Do not hesitate to support these results with figures or concrete examples of your achievements. Recruiters will then have a clearer idea of ​​what you are capable of doing and will want to have you on their team!

5 - Present your resume

Very important, the layout of your resume will make you want (or not!) Recruiters to immerse themselves in the reading of your resume! It's therefore important to look after the presentation of your curriculum vitae by ventilating as much as possible the information it contains, by skipping lines, highlighting titles and important data ... The policeof character used is also very important since it allows a more or less pleasant reading of your resume depending on the chosen one. It even allows in some cases to give a style to your resume and bring out your personality. Also consider opting for a font size that is easily readable by everyone, without falling into excess because too large font would not give a professional look to your resume.

6 - Do not exceed two pages

In order for your resume to be likely to be read by recruiters, it's essential that it's not too long. Indeed, a 5-page resume is unlikely to be read in its entirety, or even to be read at all! We recommend that you don't exceed two pages when writing your resume. And if it fits on a page, it's even better! Because as we told you, your resume should not be exhaustive and retrace your entire career, but only training or experiences that have a link with the coveted position. It's therefore important at each stage of the writing to ask the question of the most relevant information to mention on your resume.

7 - Add a personal touch to your resume

Extra-professional activities, centers of interest, courses taken outside of your working hours ... Nowadays, recruiters are more and more sensitive to all the elements that add a personal touch to your resume - specially if you write resume in English to apply for a job in an Anglo-Saxon country. When writing your resume, don't hesitate to mention some of your hobbies, passions or hobbies, provided of course that they bring a plus to your application for the position. If you are applying for a community manager position and you have a passion for photography, it may be worth mentioning for example! You can also add a personal profile at the top of your resume to briefly outline your professional goals and your qualifications and skills.

8 - A perfect spelling and grammar

The spelling of your resume must be irreproachable! Indeed, a misspelling on your resume, even if it's a typo, will be unacceptable for many employers because most of them think that a resume must be flawless. It's therefore important when writing and once your resume is written to check the spelling and grammar, so as not to find your resume automatically set aside. Avoid abbreviations as much as possible, except for very common abbreviations such as "Bac" for "baccalauréat" for example.

9 - Reread and reread your resume

Once your resume is written, it's important to read it again to check the spelling and grammar, but also that all the information mentioned is clear. During this review, also check that there are no inconsistencies in your resume or " holes ", periods of emptiness that suggest that you have not had activity for example. You can also ask a relative to reread your resume for external advice. The latter will be able to give your opinion on the general coherence of your resume, but also on the layout, the font of character and the size of this one.

10 - The format and the name of the document

Before sending your resume to recruiters, it's important to download it or convert it to PDF. Remember to rename your file with your last name, first name and possibly the position you are applying for. Recruiters receive a large number of resumes and it's important that they can navigate easily!
