Sawmill Supervisor Career Duties
- Supervise coordinates activities of workers engaged in shaping logs or wood to form rough lumber, shingles, cooperage stock, lathes, and veneer stock
- Read work orders to define type product to be produced production schedule
- Instruct workers on machine setup to meet production requirements
- Inspect material during and after processing to define that dimensions grade meet specifications

Sawmill Worker Career Duties
- Perform any combination of following duties in preparing logs for cutting into lumber storing cut lumber in sawmill
- Unload logs from trucks or cars
- Roll logs onto sawmill deck
- Examine logs for defects, like embedded pieces of iron or stone, decayed wood from splits, and marks defects for removal by other workers
- Roll logs from deck onto log or carriage
- Ride log carriage of head saw adjusts position of logs on carriage to cut planks of required thickness
- Sort guides planks emerging from saw onto roller tables or conveyors for trimming edges
- Straighten lumber on moving conveyors
- Straighten edges of rough lumber, using saw
- Operate maintains donkey engines
- Sharpen adjusts teeth of woodworking saws
- Tend fires in donkey engine
- May relieve designated workers engaged in preparing or cutting logs into lumber and be designated Sawmill-Relief Worker saw. plan. .
Separator Career Duties
- Operate conveyor system in sawmill to route lumber, cants, and timber to processing operations according to size, grade, and specie, or type of processing required
- Raise and lowers cross chains by moving levers pedals to shift boards, timbers, or cants from one set of conveyor rolls to another or from rolls to platform
- Raise stop blocks to stop lumber at specified points along rolls
- Stop reverses conveyors to re-route cants for further processing
- May operate electric hoist to move cants to stockpile
- May operate cut-off saw to cut cants to specified lengths.
Shake Backboard Notcher Career Duties
- Tend machine that notches boards for use as insulation backing on shakes
- Insert insulation board in jig butts end of board against stop
- Press pedal to lower punch that notches edge of board to provide for circulation of air when board is installed
- Remove board from jig places board on conveyor.
Shake Sawyer Career Duties
- Operate band ripsaw to cut bolts into shakes
- Start saw positions bolt on saw table
- Push guides bolt through saw so that bolt is cut diagonally to form shakes
- Trim edges of shake with saw or saws and grades shake according to length width
- Toss shake into bin according to grade
- May replace saw bands, using handtools.
Shingle Packer Career Duties
- Pack shingles or shakes into bundles for shipment
- Lays shingles or shakes in jig with small ends interwoven to form bundle
- Count shingles or shakes to make sure specified quantities
- Bind bundles with shingle bands or steel band, using stapler or crimping tool
- When packing shakes, may be designated Shake Packer saw. plan. .
Shingle Sawyer Career Duties
- Tend machine that saws wooden blocks into shingles
- Place block in machine carriage adjusts carriage for making sure that shingles are of specified thickness
