All round Logger Career Duties
- Harvest timber trees, performing combination of following tasks
- Fell trees in specified direction, removes limbs and top and measures cuts tree into log lengths, using chain saw, wedges and ax
- Secure cables to logs drives tractor or horses to skid logs to landing
- Load logs onto trucks by hand or using winch
- May drive truck to haul logs to mill.
Chaser Career Duties
- Direct placement of logs brought to landing by high lead rig or tractor unhooks chokers from logs
- Hand signals Yarding Engineer logging or Logging-Tractor Operator forestry, logging, saw. plan. where to drop logs on landing for reloading onto logging trucks
- Pull end of choker from bell sliding fastener on choker cable to open noose
- Signal operator to pull choker free of logs
- Cuts knots and limbs from logs, using ax chain saw
- Attach equipment, like chokers, lines, blocks, and fire equipment, to outbound rigging as indicated by whistle signals from Rigging Slinger logging
- May mark logs [Log Marker logging ]
- May be designated Cat Chaser logging in tractor logging operations or Water Chaser logging when working on floating logs.
Choke Setter Career Duties
- Fasten choker cables around logs for yarding from cutting area to landing
- Pull choker cables from tractor winch or main-line of yarding machine, passes ball one end under around log and secures end to bell sliding fastener to form noose
- May clear brush & earth from under log, using ax shovel
- May assist Rigging Slinger logging in installing dismantling rigging of high lead or similar yarding system
- May be designated Cat Hooker logging in tractor yarding.
Feller Operator Career Duties
- Drive operates logging tractor equipped with frontal hydraulic shear to fell trees
- Maneuver tractor to position jaws of shear around tree bole and activates shear to cut fell tree
- May control hydraulic tree clamp & boom to lift, swing and bunch sheared trees be designated Feller-Buncher Operator logging .
Felling bucking Supervisor Career Duties
- Supervise coordinates activities of workers engaged in felling trees, trimming off limbs, and sawing felled trees into logs
- Specify log lengths to be cut, trees to be left, stump height and cutting sequence
- Train workers in felling & bucking techniques safety practices
- Give instructions to workers in felling trees with unusual or dangerous characteristics
- May supervise Tree-Shear Operators logging
- Perform other duties as described under Supervisor any industry Master Title.
Grapple Operator Career Duties
- Operate heel-boom log loader equipped with cable, hydraulic, or pneumatically controlled grapples to load logs onto log trucks
- Select logs to be loaded according to specie and size required to attain balanced compact load
- May be designated according to type of machine operated as Shovel-Loader Operator logging .
Heel boom Operator Career Duties
- Operate heel-boom log loader equipped with cable, hydraulic, or pneumatically controlled grapples to load logs onto log trucks
- Select logs to be loaded according to specie and size required to attain balanced compact load
- May be designated according to type of machine operated as Shovel-Loader Operator logging .
Laborer Tanbark Career Duties
- Harvest tanbark, performing any combination of following tasks
- Cuts limbs from felled trees, using chain saw or ax
- Cuts rings slits in bark and strips bark from tree, using spud or ax
- Stack bark in ricks piles , bark-side down.
Log chipper Operator Career Duties
- Operate trailer-mounted grapple-loader and chipping machine to reduce logs logging waste to wood chips
- Control loading boom and power-grapple attachment to pick up logs place them on feed conveyor
- Adjust speed opening of feed rolls according to log diameter and activates feed rolls that pushes log through chipper unit
- Monitor gauges and adjusts speed opening of feed rolls to prevent equipment strain
- Replace defective chipping knives, using wrenches feeler gauges
- May control opening of debarking spuds tined rotating drums that remove bark from log before chipping.
Log Hauler Career Duties
- Drive truck, equipped with long-tongued trailer, to haul logs from forest to mill or storage yard
- Maneuver truck into loading position according to signals from loading crew
- Fasten chain or cable binders around logs to secure load on trailer during transit
- May release binders start power hoist to dump logs
- May assist in loading unloading logs, using crane hook or cant hook
- May raise empty trailer to carrying position on truck bed, using hoist, for deadhead empty trip to forest
- May steer trailer from cab attached to rear end of log trailer be designated Trailer Steerer logging .
