Job Duties:

Blender Occupation

Job Duties:

  • Tend machine that separates matted fur fibers blends fibers for use in felt hats
  • Select fibers according to quality, type and weight specifications
  • Dump fibers into hopper of machine
  • Start machine that forces fibers against teeth of cylinders picker rollers , that separate matted fibers, and into air-blending chamber that mixes fibers
  • Remove blended fibers from machine places fibers in bags or boxes
  • Clean machine, using brush, broom, and airhose

Job Duties:

  • Shrink felt cones to size shapes cones to form unfinished hat bodies
  • Immerse cone in hot water, places cone in steam cabinet, or holds cone over steam jet, to shrink soften cone
  • Position softened cone over heated head-shaped block
  • Press and rubs cone to smooth shape cone by hand or using iron
  • Ties cord around base of crown pulls edge of cone over base of block to form brim of hat
  • Remove cord block from hat body after drying
  • May place cones in drying cabinet following blocking process.

Job Duties:

  • Start ram that forces block upward into cone to shape crown
  • Press lever or depresses pedal to spray water force air through cone, or pours water over cone to stiffen cone
  • Release levers removes hat from machine
  • Place hats on wheeled racks
  • May be designated according to type of hat blocked as Wool-Hat Blocker hat cap .

Body Finisher Occupation

Job Duties:

  • Tend machines that finish felt hat bodies, performing any combination of following tasks
  • Tend machine that buffs or sands hat bodies to smooth or polish surface [Buffer hat and cap , Pouncing-Lathe Operator hat cap ]
  • Tend machine that applies grease & wax to hat body to finish and stiffen body [Greaser Operator hat cap ]
  • Tend machine that trims brim to specified width [Rounding-Machine Operator hat cap, tex
  • prod., nec ]
  • Rubs hat to remove surplus fur fibers smooth surface of hat, using sandpaper
  • Rubs coloring powder onto hat bodies, using powder-filled cloth bag, or sprays powder onto hat with compressed-air gun
  • Press hat brim to smooth shape brim, using hand iron
  • May be designated according to part processed as Crown Finisher hat and cap , or type of hat processed as Wool-Hat Finisher hat cap .

Breaker up Occupation

Job Duties:

  • Tend machine that agitates hats after blocking to render material soft pliable
  • Place hats in chamber of machine starts rotation of paddle arms that toss hats about until material becomes pliable
  • Stop machine after specified time removes hats for further processing.

Breaker up machine Operator Occupation

Job Duties:

  • Tend machine that agitates hats after blocking to render material soft pliable

  • Pull lever to lower ram & automatically inflate hat body to shape body brim against form
  • Remove and inspects hat for wrinkles specific shape, and stacks hat on rack
  • May insert specified shaped block in hat body before lowering ram if press is not equipped with inflation device.
