Cleaner Occupation

Job Duties:

  • Remove excess paint from metal stampings to bring out etched or embossed pattern or lettering, by rubbing surface of pattern with cloth solvent
  • Separate stampings that are scratched or marred, or that have been imperfectly finished
  • May apply paint to unpainted areas of stampings overlooked during painting process, using brush
  • May remove masking compound from specified areas of metal parts to be chemically etched, using template outline knife.

Decorator Occupation

Job Duties:

  • Engrave lettering ornamental designs on soft metal articles, like silverware, trophies, aluminum or plastic eyeglass frames, and jewelry articles, according to sketches, diagrams, photographs, or sample workpieces, using engravers handtools
  • Lays out design or lettering to be engraved on object by brushing chalklike powder or solution on item sketching design in powder, locating reference points and marking outline of design on item, using scribers or gravers, or by imprinting design on surface of item, using inked rubber stamp and marking outline, using scribers
  • Mount piece in chuck affixes chuck in jewelers ball rotating vise or mounts piece directly in jewelers ball
  • Cuts design in workpiece, using chisel-like engraving tools

Engraver Hand Hard Metals Occupation

Job Duties:

  • Lays out and cuts lettering and designs on surfaces of hard metal for hobs, dies, and molds or plates used to imprint designs on paper, metal, plastic, or porcelain products, following sketches blueprints, and using engraving tools
  • Compute dimensions of lettering design and marks or scribes layout lines on workpiece, using drawing tools, like straightedge, compass and scriber
  • Position workpiece in vise cuts designs in surface of workpiece or trims precut designs, using gravers, punches, files, hammer and shaped chisels
  • Sharpen forms cutting edge of gravers on cutter grinder [Tool-Grinder Operator machine shop ]
  • May sketch original design for customer
  • May enlarge or reduce reproduction of pattern according to size of article to be made

Job Duties:

MachineEngraver Occupation

Job Duties:

  • Operate pantograph engraving machine to engrave letters figures on products, like badges, fraternal emblems, pendants, and thermometers
  • Insert specified letters figures into pattern frame
  • Position & secures workpiece in machine holding fixture sets stylus at beginning of pattern
  • Depress pedal to lower cutting tool onto workpiece
  • Engrave designs on workpiece by moving stylus around pattern, causing cutting tool to duplicate motion on workpiece
  • Remove workpiece places in tray.

Pantograph Engraver Occupation

Job Duties:

  • Engrave specified characters on metal blanks of articles, like trophies, trays, badges, and plaques, according to work order
  • Position locks blank metal plate in holding fixture beneath rotary cutting tool
  • Select specified lettering template places template beneath stylus attached to machine cutting tool
  • Turn knob on machine to set reduction scale to obtain required reproduction ratio on metal plate
  • Start machine guides stylus over template, causing cutting tool to simultaneously duplicate characters on metal plate
  • Clean chips from metal plate, using airhose
  • Examine engraving for quality of cut, burrs, and rough spots
  • May increase or decrease depth of cut by adjusting height of worktable
  • May wipe acid over engraving to darken or highlight inscription
  • May assemble trophies, using wood base, bolts, and wrench.

PantographEngraver Occupation

Job Duties:

  • Sets up operates pantograph engraving machine to engrave designs or lettering on engraving dies, nameplates, stamps or seals, following two or three-dimensional pattern or blueprint
  • Position secures pattern to workpiece on cutting table, using rule, square, calipers and fixtures
  • Sets reduction scale & controls of pantograph to attain specified size of reproduction on workpiece height, depth and width of cut
  • Sharpen cutting tools on cutter grinder [Tool-Grinder Operator machine shop ]
  • Insert cutting tool into spindle of machine secures it with wrench
  • Start machine lowers stylus to beginning point on pattern
  • Guide stylus over pattern
  • Observe action of cutting tool and adjusts movement of stylus to make sure accurate reproduction and verifies conformance to specifications, using micrometers calipers
  • May observe action of cutting tool through microscope.

Patternmaker Occupation

Job Duties:

  • Lays out and cuts plastic patterns used for pantograph engraving according to sketches or blueprints, using drafting instruments engraving tools
  • Establish reference points on plastic sheet computes layout dimensions, following blueprints
  • Mark or scribes lines on plastic sheet, using drawing tools, like straightedge, compass and scriber
  • Cuts out pattern, using jewelers handsaw or jigsaw
  • May tend injection molding machine to form plastic patterns.

Prototype machine Operator Occupation

Job Duties:
