Assembler Helper Internal Combustion Engine Occupation

Job Duties:

  • Prepare internal combustion engines for final assembly testing, performing any of following duties
  • Push or pulls motor aside, using hook, or pushes engine on casters between assembly stations
  • Pull masking tape from engine to permit further assembly adjustment
  • Remove temporary holding screws to permit attachment of permanent assemblies, using handtools
  • Lubricate engine, using grease guns, grease fittings, brushes, and oilcans
  • Wipe oil dirt from outside surface of engine, using rags
  • Clamp engine to carrying frame raises it to overhead conveyor line, using power hoist.

Assembler Internal Combustion Engine Occupation

Job Duties:

  • Assemble internal combustion engines according to standard procedures, using handtools, power wrenches, and gauges, performing any of following operations on assembly line
  • Position bolts crankcase, block and trunion support together to form basic unit of engine, using wrenches, hammer and power hoist
  • Mount crankshaft & camshaft to bearings tightens bearing caps, using power wrench
  • Press gears, sheave, flywheel, or sprocket to shafts, using hand or hydraulic press, and locks them with keys pins
  • Insert cylinder sleeves into engine block or casing and fits piston and connecting rod assembly into cylinder bolts it to crankshaft
  • Align engine parts, like camshaft and crankshaft gears, and sets timing clearances between fixed or moving parts, using aligning gauges, dial indicator, feeler gauges, and timing light
  • Examine parts or observes movement of completed assemblies to detect malfunction, and discards or replaces defective parts or assemblies
  • Bolt subassemblies, like cylinder head, camshaft assembly, fuel pump, carburetor, governor, and water pump, to engine, using torque wrench other handtools
  • Flare and connects copper or brass tubing for lubricating and cooling systems, using flaring tools wrenches
  • May cut and bend tubing to conform to curvature of engine, using bending fixtures tubing cutters
  • May lap cylinder counterbore and valve seats to seat cylinder sleeves and valves, using hand lapping tool compound
  • May disassemble, polish, buff, and reassemble motors for demonstration purposes be designated Assembler, Show Motor engine-turbine

Assembler Steam and gas Turbine Occupation

Job Duties:

  • Fits and assembles machined parts and castings to erect steam and gas turbines according to drawings specifications, using machine tools, power tools, handtools, and measuring instruments
  • Erect, levels and aligns vertical supports for bedplates of steam turbines, using levels, transit and master straightedge
  • Lays out work for other assemblers on thrust end, oil tank and cylinder assemblies, following specified assembly procedure
  • Chip, grinds, bores, and drills machined parts castings, using portable grinders, boring bar, and lapping disk
  • Level and aligns high low pressure cylinders, oil tank, thrust end assembly, and exhaust assembly, using pin gauges
  • Scribe foundation holes, lays out offset marks, and directs machine operator to drill foundation holes
  • Shrink-fits spindle blade rings, diaphragm rings, dummy rings, ring gears, sleeves, couplings, and bushings on shafts to build turbine spindles, using portable gas heating unit
  • Measure clearance and alignment of spindle to cylinder, using micrometers calipers
  • Adjust spindle bearing pads or moves blade rings to obtain specified clearances
  • Start auxiliary oil pump to flush oil piping bearings
  • Start turbine measures balance of spindle, using vibroscope
  • Observe functioning of unit and instruments to adjust alignment and clearances to assure operation according to specifications
  • Repair worn damaged turbines.

Diesel engine Erector Occupation

Job Duties:

  • Position, fits, and secures engine parts to erect in-line, V-type, or radial diesel engines according to specifications, using machinists handtools, surface plate, torque wrench, parallel supports, and measuring instruments
  • Align vertical columns over bedplate between A-frames, using transit and levels secures columns with tie rods to form frame of engine
  • Position engine parts assemblies, like valve lever assembly, pistons, connecting rods, cylinder liners, cylinder heads, camshaft housing, crankshaft, journals, fuel injection pump, fuel nozzles and blowers with help of other workers or overhead crane
  • Ream or hones holes for fitted bolts
  • File, scrapes, drills, taps, dowels, and shims parts, like cylinder liners, keys, and matching parts
  • Measure clearances dimensions, using scales, micrometers, combination square, feeler gauge, and dial indicator
  • Turn screws to adjust fuel rack and governor, using wrenches screwdriver, and aligns timing marks on crankshaft, camshaft, and flywheel

  • Connect engine to test equipment, like dynamometer, and runs engine for specified time to test horsepower at designated revolutions per minute
  • May disassemble engine for shipping.

Job Duties:

  • Attach thermocouple wires to various parts of engine records temperature readings of oil, water, and bearings from pyrometer
