This job description (JD) describes the core job duties of programmer analyst occupation:

MAIN TASKS:

1) Plans, develops, tests, and documents computer programs, applying knowledge of programming techniques computer systems.

2) Evaluates user request for new or modified program, like for financial or human resource management system, clinical research trial results, statistical study of traffic patterns, or analyzing and developing specifications for bridge design, to define feasibility, cost time required, compatibility with current system and computer capabilities.

3) Consults with user to identify current operating procedures clarify program objectives.

4) Reads manuals, periodicals, and technical reports to learn ways to develop programs that meet user requirements.

10) Enters program codes into computer system.

11) Enters commands into computer to run test program.

12) Reads computer printouts or observes display screen to detect syntax or logic errors during program test, or uses diagnostic software to detect errors.

13) Replaces, deletes, or modifies codes to correct errors.

14) Analyzes, reviews, and alters program to increase operating efficiency or adapt to new requirements.

15) Writes documentation to describe program development, logic, coding, and corrections.

16) Writes manual for users to describe installation operating procedures.

17) Assists users to solve operating problems.

18) Recreates steps taken by user to locate source of problem rewrites program to correct errors.

19) May use computer-aided software tools, like flowchart design code generation, in each stage of system development.

20) May train users to use program.

21) May oversee installation of hardware software.

22) May provide technical assistance to program users.

23) May install test program at user site.
